Rinshi no Mori – A Former Imperial Forest Turned Public Oasis
Rinshi no Mori Park (林試の森公園) is a lush urban oasis on the border of Shinagawa and Meguro wards. Once the grounds of an Imperial Forestry Experiment Station (林業試験場), this site is now a beloved public park known for its tall trees, shady trails, and seasonal flowers. It offers a peaceful retreat for walkers, birdwatchers, and families.
Originally created as part of the Meiji government’s forestry program in 1900, this was the first official experimental forest in Japan. Researchers studied tree growth, pest resistance, and adaptability to urban climates. Some trees here are now over 100 years old — living records of Japan’s modernization and scientific curiosity.
The name “Rinshi no Mori” literally means “Forest of the Forestry Testing Grounds.” Though the experiment station was relocated, many of the original specimen trees remain — giving the park a mature and almost primeval feeling unlike younger Tokyo parks.
🌳 Botanical Richness
Visitors can stroll among rare and towering species, including camphor, zelkova, and exotic conifers. Interpretive signs offer information about the park’s origins and trees. In spring, cherry blossoms brighten the forest canopy, while autumn brings glowing colors to the leaves underfoot.
🌈 Community and Conservation
As one of Tokyo’s designated nature education parks, Rinshi no Mori offers guided nature walks and outdoor classrooms. Its pond is home to turtles, ducks, and dragonflies. Wooden walkways, play areas, and shady benches make this a go-to for local families, especially on weekends.

Withervee says…
Rinshi no Mori Park is one of the largest and most nature-rich parks in this part of Tokyo, offering a rare woodland environment for recreation and nature appreciation. Its legacy as a forestry research site gives it a distinctive character compared to more landscaped city parks.
The park is managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, not Shinagawa Ward. And most of the park is in Meguro ward.
